The After the emergency MP3s include:

  • a 40-minute radio show hosted by Triple J's Zan Rowe

  • music from Aussie artists like Blue King Brown, Lisa Mitchell and Bluejuice

  • information on trauma recovery

  • tips from health professionals on how to look after your mind and body

  • messages from people who've been through disasters.

After the 2009 Victorian bushfires, we noticed there wasn't much information or support readily available to teenagers and young adults. We spoke to young people about what you want and need during these times, and came up with a simple resource that's got important information about trauma and how to cope with the stress of an emergency, but it's also useful in everyday life.

The MP3 players are intended to be distributed in the immediate aftermath of a disaster, but are available to order at anytime before or after an emergency. If you are a parent, teacher, youth worker or carer of young people, or if you think the MP3s will help someone you know, please download the files or place an order at the email address below.

The MP3 players include:

  • the above-mentioned audio

  • 1G of space for your own music or files

  • USB function

  • FM radio function

  • battery and headphones

The MP3 players are free for any young person affected by an emergency, including the 2009 Victorian bushfires. They have been developed specically for a 12-25 age group and are not age-appropriate for children under 12.

If you are not emergency-affected and would like a copy of audio and video content on this site, please contact us for a free DVD.

About the project

  • The After the emergency MP3s and this website were developed in response to the 2009 Victorian bushfires as immediate and long-term resources for young people (12-25) affected by disasters.
  • Red Cross conducted focus groups and consultations with young people from a variety of regions around Victoria to find out what they want and need during this time and to discuss preferred methods of communication and information delivery. We also consulted with many agencies working in the recovery phase in fire-affected areas to gather youth, health, education and community services perspectives.
  • The information in these resources was developed by Red Cross and Brownwyn Tarrant. Brownwyn is an adolescent psychotherapist based in Melbourne and a member of the Australian Child and Adolescent Trauma, Loss and Grief Network.

We would like to thank everyone involved in the project for their time, expertise and generous support.
